POPULAR VALLEY ACTRESS RETURNS TO BROADWAY PALM

Local Audiences Clamour for "NUNSENSE" Starring Elizabeth Loos

MESA, Arizona (March 30, 2010Since it's last staging in 2005, not a week goes by when the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre box office doesn't have an audience member inquiring abou the return of the musical comedy NUNSENSE. Artistic Director M. Seth Reines commented, "In the last few years, we've certainly learned two things: local audiences love NUNSENSE and they want to see actress Elizabeth Loos in the role of Reverend Mother that so endeared her to Valley audiences." By popular demand, the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre is presenting NUNSENSE from April 15th through May 22nd in Mesa. Adult ticket prices range from $45 to $54 and include a buffet meal. Tickets for children 12 and under are $22. Show only seats are available for $28. Student rush tickets (show only) are $10 and available with a valid school ID. Tickets may be purchased online at www.BroadwayPalmWest.com or by calling the Box Office at (480) 325-6700.

NUNSENSE,written by Dan Goggin, tells the tale of the Little Sisters of Apache Junction who, after an unsuccessful stint as leper colony missionaries, start a new life operating Mt. Saint Helen's parochial school in Apache Junction. After one of the nuns, Sister Julia, Child of god, accidentally serves up a bad batch of vichyssoise, most of the Sisters of Apache Junction die of botulism. The surviving sisters bury all but four of the nuns when they run out of money. The story takes a divinely comedic turn when the nuns "cook up" a clever, if not holy, scheme to raise money to bury their remaining four sisters - preserved on ice in the storage freezer.

THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN DOCKS AT
BROADWAY PALM

Hit Musical Details Iconic Life Story of Titanic Heroine

MESA, Arizona (December 23, 2009) So long, Dolly! Move over, Mame! Make way for the biggest of Broadway's leading ladies, The Unsinkable Molly Brown. The Titanic may have sunk, but she survived.  This spirited tale of a real-life American legend follows the exploits of Molly Brown, whose feisty determination to rise above her impoverished beginnings leads her from the backwoods of Hannibal, Missouri, to the palaces of Europe. Along the way, she marries a wealthy miner, enters the highest echelons of Monte Carlo society, survives the sinking of the Titanic and, most importantly, earns the approval she so desperately seeks of those 'beautiful people of Denver'.  This Tony award-winning musical from the Golden Age of Broadway was created by Meredith Willson, the composer of The Music Man. Performances  begin January 7th through February 20th.  Adult ticket prices range from $45 to $54 and include a buffet meal. Tickets for children 12 and under are $22. Show only seats are available for $28. Student rush tickets (show only) are $10 and available 30 minutes prior to curtain to currently enrolled high school and college students with a valid school ID.  Tickets may be purchased online at broadwaypalmwest.com or by calling the Box Office at (480) 325-6700.

M. Seth Reines, Artistic Director of the Broadway Palm Theatre, commented, “This lady had moxie and guts; two qualities which certainly are inspirational during tough economic times.“  He added, “Molly reminds us of what an indomitable spirit can accomplish within a lifetime.“   Molly’s life’s had a theatricality that easily translated to the stage and screen.  The real Molly

was Margaret Tobin, born of Irish descent on July 18, 1867. She grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, and at 19 went to Leadville, Colorado. She married James Joseph  Brown, who worked in

the local silver mines.  "Leadville Johnny" found a means of mining gold, making the Browns wealthy and, after a move to Denver, part of Denver society. Molly Brown helped found the Denver Woman's Club and spearheaded a campaign that raised the money to build the Roman Catholic cathedral in Denver.  After touring Europe in 1912, she booked passage on a ship to return home -- the Titanic. Her heroism in assisting other survivors and getting people to safety was recognized with many honors including the French Legion of Honour in 1932.   Molly Brown was head of the Titanic Survivors' Committee which supported immigrants who had lost everything in the disaster, and helped to get a memorial erected to the Titanic survivors in Washington, D.C.  Molly Brown went on to study acting and drama in Paris and New York and to work as a volunteer during World War I.  J.J. Brown died in 1922 and Margaret died in 1932 of a brain tumor in New York.

In 1960, the Broadway musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown opened with Tammy Grimes, who won a Tony Award for her performance. The production ran through 1962 for 532 performances.  The film version was released in 1964 and is often cited for Debbie Reynolds’ rousing performance that garnered her only Oscar nomination.  The film received six Academy Award nominations.  Recently, the musical premiered in London at the Landor Theatre in May, 2009.

The role of Molly at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre will be played by Lisa LeCuyer, who has performed in the national tour of A Christmas Carol as Martha Cratchit, Oklahoma as Ado Annie, Cabaret as Sally Bowles, Chicago as Roxie and Company as Jenny. Ms. LeCuyer remarked, “Margaret Brown was an amazing woman who was truly ahead of her times.”  She continued, “When I researched her life, I discovered she was an early feminist with a wonderful philanthropic outlook.”

PATSY'S BRIDAL SHOWER PREMIERES AT BROADWAY PALM

Chicago Interactive Comedy Hit Takes a New Spin for Valley Audiences

MESA, Arizona (December 29, 2009) PATSY'S BRIDAL SHOWER, an interactive comedy when cash meets trash by Nick Kurasz and Richard Schultz, premieres in the Marquee Room at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, on Friday, January 15th.  Bridal showers in the Valley may never been the same again!  This comedy hit ran for five years in Naperville, a suburb west of Chicago; it delighted audiences with its tale of two dysfunctional families who attempt to forge a bond at a bridal shower just weeks before the wedding.  This new version updated for the Valley is set in Buckeye where the bride’s family resides in a double-wide trailer, while the groom’s family heralds from gated community in Paradise Valley.  Friends and family members unexpectedly drop in on the festivities resulting in a surprise ending.  Audiences are asked to play along with shower games and to help the young couple makes decisions about their upcoming wedding.  Chicago critics raved that PATSY'S BRIDAL SHOWER is “wacky fun” and a goofy romp that has everyone laughing.

Performances  begin Friday, January 15th through Sunday, May 9th.  Adult ticket prices are $39 and include a buffet meal. Show and dessert seats are available for $24. Student rush show and dessert tickets are $12 and available 30 minutes prior to curtain to currently enrolled high school and college students with a valid school ID.  Tickets may be purchased online at broadwaypalmwest.com or by calling the Box Office at (480) 325-6700.

Richard Schultz, a resident of Central Phoenix, updated the script for the Valley.  He explained his decision to bring back the comedy, 2009 was such a daunting year for all of us.  The charm

of PATSY'S BRIDAL SHOWER has always been its ability to rejuvenate audiences through the transformative power of laughter.  He added, In remembering how much Chicago audiences enjoyed PATSY’S BRIDAL SHOWER, it seemed like the ideal time to stage the show again as a funny diversion for Valley audiences.  Schultz, who is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and has a MFA in Directing from Illinois State University, has directed throughout the Valley including the Herberger Theatre, Tempe Center for the Arts, Center for the Performing Arts at Paradise Valley Community College and Theatreworks.  He is a founder of a performing arts charter school in North Phoenix.

Owner Tom Prather commented, M. Seth Reines, Artistic Director of the Broadway Palm Theatre, brought the script to my attention.  When I read the script, I found it very funny.  After hearing the script read by a group of our actors, I was sold and knew our audiences would fall in love with the zany characters and the chance to play along with the cast.  The cast of nine features local actors from throughout the Valley.
